Kids are free in October all over San Diego! 100 partners have joined this year for San Diego Kids Free October. The San Diego Zoo has offered kids-free Octobers for more than 25 years. Local tourism officials expanded the program last year to get families to extend the summer traveling season into a month when tourism traditionally falls off.

This is our first October in our home city of San Diego since we’ve been grandparents. It’s a busy month for us, with several conferences to attend. We’ll be out-of-state in Colorado for 10 days in the middle of the month (fall in the Rockies!). But you can be sure that when we have a free day, we’ll be taking advantage of some of these great opportunities to see area attractions with our grandkiddos. Most of the bargains are for ages 12 and under. The terms vary from place to place, but usually kids are free with an adult admission.

100 San Diego Attractions

The list of kids free admissions includes the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, museums in Balboa Park, Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, Legoland California in Carlsbad, Sea World San Diego and the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.

Wow! Count us in for the Birch Aquarium and the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum. We are members of the San Diego Zoo, so take full advantage of the Zoo and Safari Park with the grandkids already. We love those places.

Many area hotels are offering Kids Eat Free in October as well. What a great month to visit San Diego with your family.

Do the Coastal Thing: Belmont Park, Trains & Surf

Belmont Park at Mission Beach is offering unlimited ride wristbands. Do your kids love trains? Our grandson sure does. Free train rides on the Coaster and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfline — between San Diego and Oceanside only in October.

Anyone want to learn to surf? Surf Diva Surf School in La Jolla is offering a free surf lesson. Brrr. Sounds a little too chilly for me. I’d take a pass on that one. But hey, if you go, you might meet my niece, Kimmy. She’s a Surf Diva instructor.
